Classic 18th century townhouse in South London

This classic 18th century townhouse in South London is home to Robert and John who are respected dealers in quality country furniture from the 17th to the 19th centuries. As it happens their stock is a perfect fit for their house and instead of a shop the home is used to display the pieces that are for sale. The great advantage for buyers or collectors is being able to see the sometimes very rare items in a homely and authentic setting where the architectural, details, textiles and colours all evoke an earlier age. After removing unsympathetic 80's decor, bad electrics and plumbing and taking the place back "to its bones" they have recreated rooms with tremendous atmosphere although not using the colours of the time which were intense and often quite vivid. Rather the whole house is painted in shades of off-white, which shows the furniture in a more contemporary style while respecting the age of the house. Country furniture is easy to live with and works in old or modern interiors almost better than any other plus there is the delight of the craftsmanship and individuality. Country and modern ceramics feature here, textiles and interest art, set over 4 floors it is light and calm with a delightful garden and studio at the rear.
