A Timeless Home

Nineteenth-century house in the Cotswolds

Purchasing a nineteenth-century house in a pretty Cotswolds village on impulse paid dividends for Julia Delamain who craved a timeless home. Julia has transformed the house and garden. She altered the upstairs layout to make the family bathroom bigger. Downstairs the major work involved removing the wall between the kitchen and dining room to increase the sense of space. Neighbour Dominic Ash designed the new streamlined kitchen in a matt dark grey finish, contrasted by sections of natural elm. Dominic also made the dining table with a Formica top. A pair of lampshades made from vintage silk saris bring warm tones to the sitting room. Curtain fabric was sourced from Lewis & Wood. Julia bought much of the artwork at local auctions or in the bric-a-brac shops in nearby Cotswold towns and villages. Upstairs, in the double-aspect master bedroom, a vintage deep-buttoned, velvet-covered chesterfield sofa is placed at the end of the bed to take advantage of the views over the garden and valley beyond.
