The Red & The Grey

Stylish Lisbon apartment

A stylish combination of grey, white and red was chosen for the renovation of this unusual split-level apartment in Lisbon - the result of a collaboration between Portuguese architect Teresa Castro and French/Spanish interior designer Marie-Christine Follenfant who purchased the property, formerly an artist's studio in 2015.  The property originally had two staircases which rose from the entrance level to the upper floor - one led to the studio, the other to the bedroom.  Creating space is one of Castro's strengths and in this case she removed the second staircase and constructed a bridge in order to connect what is now the living area to the open gallery and bathroom.  In between is the enclosed pod-like bedroom which she designed to provide privacy without detracting from the sense of space afforded by the lofty ceiling height. Castro describes the concept as being a box within a box.  Removing the second staircase increased the floor space in the kitchen where a circular marble dining table and vintage Tolix chairs are lit from above by a vintage chandelier.   Custom-made units finished in hi-gloss grey are contrasted by bright red appliances.    Against the white backdrop of the perimeter walls, the newly constructed sections are painted in industrial grey with Marie-Christine's favoured 'life-force' red featuring prominently in the choice of furniture, rugs and decorative accessories.
