Sublime Setting

Old stone guest cottage on a large Scottish estate

When it came to restoring this old stone guest cottage on a large Scottish estate the owner took as his inspiration an imaginary retired ships captain who wanted to spend his days close to the sea, observing the ever- changing sky, the wonderful bird life and to do a bit of fishing and cooking outside in the summer. Originally tiny, comprising just the centre portion, it has been extended at both ends to accommodate two bedrooms and bathrooms. A spacious entrance hall gives way to a living room with an open fireplace and through the internal hall window, a good way to create a feeling of light and space, is the match-boarded modern kitchen. All the soft country coloured fabrics and lampshades are from Fermoie Fabric company while the furniture is a mix of own designs and old pieces. An oriental carpet, bought in London, pulls the living room seating together and adds a shot of rich pattern and colour. The setting is sublime.
