Capturing the Brontes

18th century Fitzrovia home

Printmaker, photographer, author, scriptwriter Charlotte Cory bought her 18th century Fitzrovia home some five years ago and set about adapting it to her artistic way of life. Working with her builder (having dispensed with the architect) she reconfigured the house, ripping out the basement kitchen to make way for her massive printing press. A vast Victorian range takes up most of one wall in the ground floor reception room which doubles as a work area and display space. The first floor is the library with spectacular tiled fireplace, the second is the bedroom and bathroom, and the newly built top floor is now the light and airy kitchen, complete with a reconditioned AGA enamelled in Cory's favourite colour, pale blue. Using mirror wherever possible, Cory cleverly maximised the sense of light and space - she acknowledges that the nearby Soane Museum was a strong influence. Much of Cory's furniture is upholstered in her digitally printed fabric. The fabric covering the trio of armchairs is her design as is that on the dining chairs and the chaise longue. The subject matter of Cory's forthcoming exhibition "Capturing the Brontes" at Long & Ryle from Feb 5th -28th will focus on the Yorkshire family whose lives have fascinated Cory since childhood.
